The sudden inflow of EU funds can be a great burden for Romania’s regions, says Sorin Ioniţă. As a new EU member, Romania as a whole has still a chance to avoid becoming one of “Europe’s Sicilies” trapped in a developmental dead end.
Nevertheless, inside Romania there are already areas threatened by the immobility-cum-dependency syndrome so familiar to those who visited Southern Europe.
