European Elections as Test for General Elections, by Alina Mungiu-Pippidi

România Liberă, December 27, 2006

These days, I’m awful glad I don’t have a Liberal party membership card, nor one from the Social Democrats, nor any other cards in general except for my drivers’ license. I wouldn’t want to be among those who have to decide where to cast their money and their votes. Many party activists are shaking in their boots, for fear they won’t be on the winning side and are frantically fussing to position themselves rightly. My sympathy, does, however, go out for the electorate of the two parties, who just wants to know who they’re voting for. Those who wanted to strengthen the alliance for the early elections didn’t realize what a Pandora’s box they’ve opened by questioning the identity of all standing democratic Parliamentary parties.
