The volume „Transition. The First 25 Years”, co-authored by SAR president, Alina-Mungiu Pippidi and Vartan Arachelian was released on November 21st on the occasion of the Gaudeamus International Book Festival in Bucharest. The release was attended by President-elect, Klaus Iohannis.
“Transition. The First 25 Years” was published by Polirom and contains dialogues recorded in august 2014, focusing on the professional and civic journey undertaken by Alina-Mungiu Pippidi. The book answers questions such as “Why did communism collapse?”, “Revolution or coup d’etat?” “Window democracy or populism?”, “How much did anti-communism succeed?”, “How was the Romanian capitalism built?” and “Where did we lose Băsescu?”
In ten separate dialogues, the two authors discuss topics such as why did the Romanian communism lead to a difficult transition, whether its collapse was a revolution or a coup d’etat, why there was no lustration in Romania or how could the country’s performance in the EU be improved.
Stelian Tănase, president and general director of the Romanian National Television, who attended the release declared that Alina Mungiu Pippidi remained „a person with independent thinking”. In addition to Alina Mungiu-Pippidi, the event was attended by writer Liviu Antonesei and literary critic Daniel Cristea Enache.
