Through the implementation of the project “Developing the watchdog capacity through the Alliance for a Clean Romania”, the Romanian Academic Society, together with the Centre for Independent Journalism, the Pro.Do.Mo Association, the Save Bucharest Association and Vellenes Fellesorganisasjon (Norway), aim at extending the watchdog activity performed by the Alliance for a Clean Romania, which functions through the web portal www.romaniacurata.ro. The most extensive effort of this kind in Romania so far, measured by the number of contributors, members and the extent of activity, the Alliance will enroll more volunteers at regional and local level and thus decentralize its national monitoring activity, which has been carried out mostly from Bucharest.
The project involves a greater number of volunteers in monitoring public expenditures and public integrity by two means. Firstly, action models, already-made instruments and training will be offered primarily through the popular online portal www.romaniacurata.ro, as well as through our media partners. Secondly, through the promotion of leadership figures and positive social role models, people of high public profile who are among theAlliance’s leaders and supporters (Moise Guran, Catalin Tolontan, Alina Mungiu-Pippidi, Nicusor Dan, Toni Grecu, Corneliu Porumboiu, etc), who will involve themselves on a voluntary basis in recruiting other volunteers and promoting the project and its aims.
The goal of the Alliance is to contribute to the development of civil society’s capacity to inflict normative constraints on the corrupt behavior of state authorities and thus increase the transparency, responsiveness and accountability of these entities. These latter aspects have been monitored through original indicators developed by the Romanian Academic Society since the year 2000.
Implementation period: April 1, 2014 – March 31, 2016
