FT REPORT – ROMANIA: Nation watches as former allies end their honeymoon

“Alina Mungiu-Pippidi, head of the Romanian Academic Society, a public policy and research group, says the government will have dropped all pretensions toward continuing reform if Ms Macovei is sacked.
Signalling much the same sentiment, Susanne Kastner, vice-president of the German Bundestag, warned that Romania risks triggering a safeguard clause – an EU provision for punishing the country if reforms do not continue – if Ms Macovei is dismissed”.
