Between Local Demagogues and Central Abusers, by Sorin Ioniţă

Some two years ago, while I was in a seminar in Brusells, a Bulgarian colleague from Russe was whining to me about how exhausting her return trip will be, on board a plane to Sofia, then well over 300 kilometers on a bus across Bulgaria. I asked her why she didn’t fly to Bucharest, which was only 60 kilometers away. She told me she gladly would, if she didn’t have to wait around in customs and pay transit taxes for Romania which were more expensive than the Sofia-Russe trip.
